Italy's gay tourism worth €2.7 million a year
The value of Gay tourism in Italy has been calculated - according to the Expo Tourism Gay organisation. Their research has revealed that the average gay tourist spends €1,070 per trip in Italy, raking in €2.7m for the country's economy. This is according to numbers announced on Wednesday by the Expo Tourism Gay trade fair - which is happening this week in Rome. Gay travellers also spend 10 days in Italy when they visit the country.
By our calculations that means that Italy only receives on average 2,500 gay visitors a year, which does seem a very small number. We would hazard a guess that the actual number of gay tourists is many times that.
Anyway, let's hope Italy, which is particularly behind compared to other advanced Western European nations when it comes to gay rights, takes note and affords a little more respect to its gay citizens and visitors.
