Gay ski weeks threatened by avalanches

The Daily Telegraph, Feb 12

Europe's big gay ski weeks mostly happen in the Alps - and the area is suffering from unusually high concentrations of avalanches this year. The region's head of the French mountain rescue service warns that the avalanche situation across the Alps is ‘explosive.’ Capitaine Olivier Cousin, of the Compagnies Républicaines de Sécurité (CRS) in Briançon (the fortified town that is part of the Serre Chevalier ski area) made the comments after 1.5m of snow fell across much of France, Switzerland, Austria and Italy in a fortnight. The exceptionally icy base - caused by the poor start to the season – means the snowpack is extraordinarily unstable, with more heavy snow expected this weekend.
