Conchita Wurst's win boosts Vienna tourism

The Daily Telegraph, May 17

Conchita Wurst’s win in the Eurovision Song Contest on Saturday night has given Vienna’s gay scene a tourism boost.

The Austrian capital was already popular with gay travellers but now tourism bosses are expecting the city’s appeal to continue rising – like a phoenix, perhaps.

"You won't see bare bottoms or smutty word plays like you do for other cities,” said Norbert Kettner, the city’s tourism chief told AFP news agency.

“Vienna is sticking to its brand – classical and elegant. If you just want to party 24 hours a day, there are better cities. But if you are interested in quality cuisine and culture – and also partying – then you should come to Vienna."

The tourist board’s recent strategy targeted gay holidaymakers with a special guide and a Facebook page called "Gayfriendly Vienna" – which has featured a photo of Conchita Wurst since the singer won the competition in beard and ballgown on Saturday.
